NIHR BioResource

NIHR Cambridge BioResource Open & Babraham Institute Collaboration Wednesday 19th June 2019.

On the 19th of June, the Babraham Research Campus will be hosting a team from the NIHR BioResource Centre Cambridge, who will be describing the BioResource and highlighting some of the research studies where it has been used in investigating the links between genes, the environment, health and disease. The BioResource benefits from a panel of around 17,000 local volunteers who are willing to be approached to participate in research studies, and has been used to investigate a range of diseases, including cancer, dementia, diabetes and multiple sclerosis, plus many more.

 

A number of talks are planned:

 

10.00 - 11.00      Short talks from BioResource team outlining the resource, highlighting some of the research that the panel has made possible through volunteer participation and describing how volunteers can assist in different health research studies.

Please note: this talk is suitable for all on campus, even if you do not work in a research capacity

 

11.00 - 12.00      Light refreshments and opportunity to an opportunity to ask questions of the Cambridge NIHR BioResource team.

                              Breakout space, Cambridge Building

 

The above the talk and refreshments are free events, however registration is requested to support the refreshment provision.

 

12.00 - 13.00      Scientific Presentations aimed at group leaders and principal investigators from the Institute and campus companies, where group leaders who have use the BioResource will provide short overviews of their work.

11.00 - 14.15      Should you wish to volunteer to join the Cambridge BioResource, there will also be the opportunity to donate saliva or blood samples, supported by NIHR  research nurses.

Colonnade meeting room, Babraham Hall

Consenting volunteers are asked to donate their DNA via a blood or saliva sample which is used together with other information, such as gender and ethnicity, to match them to specific research studies. Volunteers are free to choose which studies they would like to take part in, allowing the NIHR BioResource Centre Cambridge to provide researchers with groups of participants, tailor-made to the research study.

This event is open to staff working at the Babraham Institute. We hope to collaborate with other research centers in the future.
